On the weekend of March 12-14 PDX airport Portland Oregon received and influx of senior karate sensei, instructors and athletes from across the country that assembled for the 24th Annual Ryobu-Kai Classic. Mt. 2010 Goshin Ryu Karate Invitational

By Bill Bly

Sensei Luis Ruiz invited us to the Goshin Ryu Karate Invitational tournament held at the Elmcor Center here in Queens NY. This was the second year for the event. He expected about 250 competitors based on last year’s attendance and true to his expectations he had a full house. This event is a NYTL (New York Traditional Karate League) event. The league has been making progress to provide a consistently well-run event with a large corps of officials and volunteers.

The 3rd Otosan International Karate Cup

By Bill Bly

Sensei Javier Mantilla hosted the 3rd Otosan event in New York City. Gauchos Gym in the Bronx was a convenient location where more than 250 competitors were in attendance. New York karate events consistently attract 220 plus competitors so it was not a surprise to see the venue full with a large number of spectators on hand to enthusiastically cheer on the athletes.

There were more than a dozen countries in attendances as we could see athletes from Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, USA and Venezuela. An event in NYC that attracts international competitors is a great opportunity for local athletes to test their skills against some of the best from other countries.

February 26, 2010

Shihan Serge Clark Chief instructor of OKINAWA karate KOBUDO kai hosted the 6th karate KOBUDO championships on January 31, 2010. Since moving to long island, New York from the beautiful state of Hawaii 12 years ago, Shihan Clark has hosted six tournaments in the New York area. As a trade mark the tournament stated right on time at 9:00 am sharp. The national anthem was playing as the crowds were finding there way into the Elmcor gym located in Corona Queens. The few who were not use to tournaments starting on time were disappointed; when they arrived late and discover that there divisions already went.

WSKF News

The newly refurbished Edmonds Community College gym was filled with 250 competitors from 40 different dojos for Washington State Karate-do Federation’s 2010 Invitational Tournament and USA-NKF Qualifier.  This event, which is reputed to be one of the best regional karate tournaments in the country, continues to draw top competitors and teams from across the USA and British Columbia.  Greatly improved spectator seating, enhanced lighting, a freshly finished hardwood floor and new WSKF competition mats provided a perfect venue for the competition.

Of course any event like this requires a lot of help to get off the ground and we are very thankful to have a superb group of volunteers in registration, admissions, concessions, staging, score keeping, security, medical, and food services.

2010 USA Karate Nationals - update

2010 USA Karate Nationals

Congratulations to every one, competitors and staff alike. It was great to be back in the south. Greenville SC provided a welcome venue with southern hospitality as USA Karate held its 2010 Team Trials and National Championships. We will have a more substantive article in coming days as we have yet to go through all our photos. We do have posed shots from our backdrop and many of the podium photos that we were able to take during the event. See Photos here

Overall we had a good time visiting with many old friends and meeting new ones too. Unfortunately there were a number that were no longer with us. Yes there will always be change but it is always sad to lose old friends. On a brighter note life has been good for us in NYC. I am now teaching at web design at Long Island University and a new job at the United Nations working on the web. We truly are blessed. This keeps us pretty busy so we hope you can appreciate our efforts to get the photos online. The action shots are in progress. We will be contacting many of you for feedback and articles. We remain your news and information source - working together trying to make a difference.

US Team in Quito Ecuador

A picture says a thousand words!

We all know the saying but in this case that is what we have to offer. A special thank you to David Richmond of USA Karate for fowarding these photos to us.  It would be great if we had a story but it is apparent from the photos that the US women team did very well with a first place in kumite. We understand that Eimi Kurita and Jessica Brew also medalled in kata.  We have a few more photos to share with you. Congratulations to everyone!

2010 Warrior Cup

By Bill Bly

The 2010 Warrior Cup held in Queens NY was a new event for us. We were pleasantly surprised to find nearly 300 competitors at this event. Sensei Errol Bennett was the host for this event. He had asked us to come and we were delighted that we could attend as we continue to get more involved locally. The New York Traditional Karate League events are maintaining a good standard as we see consistency at these tournaments. The New York crews run good fair events with a large support of officials and volunteers.

The Karate Kid,  Opening June 11th.

In Columbia Pictures' The Karate Kid, 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could've been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's (Taraji P. Henson) latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying—and the feeling is mutual—but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre's feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts “the karate kid” on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.
