2010 Liberty Classic
By Bill Bly
The Liberty Classic and the New York traditional Karate League is a winning combination. In it’s 5th year the Liberty Classic has become a tradition as the first event of the year in the New York Metropolitan area. Sensei Herb Wiles has done a fine job of organizing this tournament scheduled on the weekend of Martin Luther King Day.
Once again held at York College, this venue provides a large open arena akin to a mini Madison Square Garden. The acoustics are good for cheering fans along with background music delivered through a sound system by a local DJ. Yes the event had atmosphere. People were happy. Competitors moved to the music waiting at their ring. Video included

The event began with the pledge of allegiance as Sensei wiles himself a Viet Nam veteran reminded everyone that the pledge is special to him and the importance of patriotism. This was a sad weekend too as the Haitian earthquake had just occurred and among us were Haitian friends.

Cheryl Murphy dominated the women kumite. While the senior men’s kumite provide many exciting matches. Brian Ramrup deliver numerous jodan kicks, Adam Older brought tremendous power and takedowns. The matches were fast paced and exciting.
Young Destiny Vegara took home a couple of big trophies, as this young lady is quickly becoming a favorite. It is impressive to see such young athletes at work with great poise and confidence as they move through their kata and kumite.
The Liberty Classic is a fine example of what can happen when people work together. Congratulations to sensei Wiles for his efforts and to all the competitors. A big thank you to the excellent volunteer corps and officials that make these quality events possible. We expect to see more good things coming from the NY Metropolitan area and the New York Traditional Karate League. Note: I will try add more photos and videos - Let me know if you have something to share - Bill
